St. Mary's Church, Northchurch

The church itself is medieval - proper old, with Norman features if you know what to look for - sitting quietly in Northchurch village just outside Berkhamsted. Inside, there's decent stained glass and the usual accumulated clutter of centuries: memorials, old stone work, the sort of place where you can spend twenty minutes reading inscriptions and feeling properly connected to how people actually lived round here.

It's free to wander in during daylight, though opening times can be a bit hit-and-miss. Worth checking locally before you trek out. Most visitors spend thirty minutes maximum - long enough to see what's there without overstaying the welcome. Families with restless kids might find it a quick stop rather than a destination in itself, but anyone interested in medieval churches or local history will find it genuine and unpretentious.

The real value comes when you're based at one of the nearby campsites. Norcott Campsite is barely over a mile away, so St. Mary's works as an easy walk or short drive combined with exploring Berkhamsted's high street and the castle ruins. Hill Farm Camping and Chiltern Yurts are further out - five or six miles - but still reasonable for a morning outing before a bigger walk. The Chilterns around here have proper footpaths, so you could easily link a church visit with wandering the local countryside. It's the kind of place that matters more in context than on its own.
