St Mary's Church, Barcombe

The Church of St Mary in Barcombe sits quietly off the main drag near Lewes, the sort of place you might miss entirely if you weren't looking for it. Step inside and you've got genuine medieval bones - the chancel dates back to the 13th century, with later additions that chart several centuries of Sussex worship. The interior feels lived-in rather than museum-like, which is exactly how it should be.

What strikes you most is the simplicity. High ceilings, decent stained glass, and the kind of peaceful atmosphere that actually earns the word peaceful. There's no audio guide or gift shop nonsense. You get what the building offers: a proper working parish church that's been doing its job for 700 years. That matters.

It's worth a stop if you're already in the Lewes area - not worth a solo pilgrimage, but absolutely worth the detour if you're walking or driving through Sussex. Free admission, obviously. Allow 20 minutes to wander round and actually absorb it rather than just ticking it off. The churchyard's pleasant too.

If you're basing yourself at The Secret Campsite or Blackberry Wood, both cracking spots nearby, this makes a decent leg-stretch between your pitch and a proper village walk through Lewes itself. History types will get more from it than families with restless kids, though it's never been known to bore anyone outright. Go when it's open, which tends to be daytime hours - ring ahead if you're making a special trip.
