St Mary the Virgin, Ware

Inside, the stonework tells the story - 15th-century nave, some lovely stained glass, and the kind of quiet that makes you drop your voice without thinking about it. There's a decent amount of detail if you're into ecclesiastical architecture: the chancel's well-preserved, and the memorials scattered around give you a sense of who mattered in Ware over the centuries. It won't take more than half an hour to look round properly.

This works best for history buffs and anyone interested in parish churches rather than casual visitors after ten minutes' wandering. Kids might find it interesting if they're at that age, but it's not a themed attraction - it's the real thing, which some find meditative and others find a bit quiet.

It slots nicely into a park holiday based at Hertford Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Toad Abode, both excellent spots for exploring the Lea Valley.
