St Mary The Virgin Ovingham

The church sits on a slight rise above the Tyne, all honey-coloured stone and Saxon origins - a proper surprise if you're cycling through Ovingham village rather than heading straight for the main roads around Stocksfield. St Mary the Virgin has been here since around 650 AD, though what you see now is largely medieval with some sturdy Victorian additions.

Inside, the nave feels genuinely old. There's a Saxon window you can actually spot, some decent medieval tombs, and the kind of light that comes through old glass in a way that matters. If you're into church architecture or local history, you'll spend a good twenty minutes poking about. Casual visitors might manage ten before the peace gets them restless.

The churchyard's worth a wander too - sweeping views down to the river valley, proper quiet. It's the kind of place that makes sense as a stop when you're exploring the Tyne Valley rather than a destination in itself.

Getting here works well if you're based at Valley View Camping & Glamping just up the road - the walk into the village takes maybe fifteen minutes and you'll pass some decent riverside sections. No admission charge that I'm aware of, and you can usually get inside during daylight hours. Worth the detour if you're already exploring Stocksfield area, less worth planning a special trip unless Saxon churches are genuinely your thing.
