St Mary the Virgin Church, Eastry

The church sits quietly in Eastry village, just a short drive from Sandwich, with the kind of understated presence that makes you wonder how you missed it before. St Mary the Virgin is a proper medieval church - flint and stone, the sort of place where you can run your hand along walls that have stood for seven centuries and actually feel the weight of time.

What strikes you first is the interior light. The windows flood the nave with a clarity that makes the wooden roof beams glow almost amber. There's a 14th-century chancel, some decent brasses if you're into that sort of detail, and the general sense of a working parish church that hasn't been prettified within an inch of its life. The sort of space where locals still come on Sunday and it genuinely matters.

This is best for the church crawler, the person who gets a real kick from tracing medieval Kent through its architecture. An hour tops, unless you're sketching or photographing. Families with younger kids might find it a bit static - there's no interactive anything, just old stone and prayer books.

If you're based at one of the nearby camping spots - Ham Hideaway Glamping is barely half a mile away, and Fallow Fields sits just outside Sandwich - Eastry makes a natural morning or late afternoon stop. The village itself is quiet rather than thrilling, but perfectly peaceful if you're decompressing on a park holiday. Free admission almost certainly, though do check locally. Worth the detour if you're church-spotting through Kent. Not worth dragging reluctant teenagers to.
