St Mary & St Botolph Whitton

The church sits quietly on the edge of Whitton village, east of Stowmarket, and honestly it rewards the small detour if you're already in Suffolk exploring the area. St Mary and St Botolph is a proper medieval church - the sort where you half expect to find a cat sleeping on a pew, which is exactly what happened when I visited on a Tuesday afternoon.

Inside, there's real character. The Victorian restoration work is obvious but not jarring, and the medieval timber roof is worth looking up for. There's decent stained glass, though nothing that will stop you in your tracks, and the font has that solid, ancient feel to it. The churchyard is peaceful rather than spectacular - long grass between headstones, a few mature trees providing shade.

This works best if you're walking in the area or staying at nearby Wheathill holiday park, just under five miles away. It's not a destination on its own, but a natural stop if you're combining it with a ramble through the Suffolk countryside. Give yourself twenty minutes inside, maybe another fifteen if you're the sort to read gravestones and sit quietly.

Access appears free - most rural churches are. Check ahead if you want to be certain, as opening times aren't published. The real draw here is the rural peace and a genuine glimpse of village church life, not architectural fireworks. Families with older children will get something from it; younger kids might find it dull unless you make a game of spotting gargoyles.
