St Mary is a working parish church, which means you're visiting someone's actual place of worship rather than a museum piece - and that matters. The interior is surprisingly light for its age, with decent stained glass and some decent monuments if you're into that sort of thing.

It's the sort of stop that appeals to church enthusiasts and local history types more than casual tourists, though walkers heading down the coast path between Bamburgh and Seahouses often duck in out of curiosity. The churchyard itself is peaceful without being dramatic, and the setting in a proper working village rather than somewhere twee gives it genuine character. Allow twenty minutes unless you're really taking it in.

There's no charge to enter - just the usual church etiquette applies. The nearest accommodation with any real infrastructure is the Barn at Beal Restaurant & Campsite, about six miles south towards Beal, which makes a decent base if you're exploring this stretch of Northumberland. Belford itself is unremarkable for facilities, though it sits handily for the bigger draws - Bamburgh Castle and the coast are close enough for day trips. St Mary works best as part of a wider ramble rather than a destination in itself, but it's the kind of place that reminds you why you came to the northeast in the first place.
