St Lawrence's Church South Cove

The church sits right on the edge of a crumbling cliff, which is rather the point. St Lawrence's at South Cove is a medieval building doing its best to ignore the fact that the North Sea is slowly eating away at the Suffolk coast - and has been for centuries. You'll find it just south of Southwold, a short drive from the town centre, perched on what remains of solid ground.

Inside, it's properly atmospheric. The nave and chancel are genuinely old, and there's a real sense of the centuries pressing down on you. The setting is what makes it, though. Stand outside and you're staring directly at the eroding cliff edge; the church has already lost its tower and graveyard to the sea over the years. It's not morbid exactly, just matter-of-fact about human impermanence.

Walkers will find it worth the detour - it's not far from Southwold's clifftop promenade and slots neatly into a coastal ramble. You won't spend long here, maybe thirty minutes unless you're really into ecclesiastical architecture, but the location and the quietly unsettling nature of its precarious position make it memorable.
