St Lawrence's Church

The churchyard at St Lawrence's is one of those quiet places where you actually notice the sound of birds. Built in the 12th century, this Kent church sits a short walk from Sevenoaks town centre - far enough out to feel properly rural, close enough that you won't need to drive. The stone exterior shows its age without pretension, and stepping inside reveals the usual appeal of medieval churches: arched ceilings, worn flagstones where centuries of feet have trodden, and that particular smell of old wood and stone that modern buildings never manage.

It's the kind of place history enthusiasts will linger in for a proper look, poking about among the monuments and reading the wall plaques. Kids, though, might get restless after ten minutes unless they're the curious type.
