St. Kessog

The church sits on a low hill above Stirling, a straightforward stone building that's been here since medieval times. Inside, you'll find sturdy pillars, a few interesting bits of carved stonework, and that particular smell of old churches - damp stone and time. It's dedicated to St Kessog, a sixth-century Celtic saint, which gives the place a bit more substance than your average parish church.

This isn't a showstopper attraction. You won't need more than thirty minutes, honestly, and that includes a slow wander round the churchyard. What it does offer is peace and quiet - the kind of place where you can actually think without queues or audio guides. It works well if you're staying at The WHW Hotel & Campsite just down the road; worth combining with a walk around Stirling itself rather than making a special trip from Glasgow.

History enthusiasts will find something here - the connection to early Scottish Christianity matters to some - but families with young children might find it a bit too still and solemn. If you're camping nearby and fancying a cultural break between countryside days, it does the job. Equally, if Stirling's not on your itinerary, you won't miss anything crucial by skipping it. The churchyard views are decent enough, and there's genuine character in the building itself, even if it's not particularly spectacular.
