St John's Methodist Church

The red-brick Methodist chapel on Brough's high street is the sort of place you'd walk past without thinking twice if you weren't looking for it. But step inside St John's and you're in a proper little pocket of Victorian earnestness - all dark wood pews, that particular smell of old hymn books, and a surprising amount of light flooding through the upper windows. It's a working church, so don't expect museum-like polish, but that's rather the point. This is faith in its everyday clothes.

Most people won't spend more than twenty minutes here, which is fine. It's not a destination in itself unless you're genuinely into Methodist architecture or interested in how ordinary communities worshipped in the 19th century. The real appeal, though, is the walk around Brough itself - it's an underrated market town with a proper high street and a castle worth exploring if you've got the energy. The church sits naturally within that route rather than being a standalone stop.

If you're staying at William's Den or Wolds Glamping nearby, it makes sense to venture into Brough for a morning wander. The Methodist chapel is free to visit during daylight hours - ring ahead if you want to go inside rather than peek through the windows. Combine it with a pint at one of the local pubs and you've got a decent afternoon sorted. Nothing flashy, but honest and worth the detour if you're passing through Yorkshire's quieter corners.
