St John's isn't the sort of place that demands hours of your time, but it's absolutely worth a twenty-minute detour if you're staying at Parkdean or Old Hartley and fancy a proper wander around the parish.

Inside, you'll find the usual church fixtures - decent stained glass, a reasonable nave, nothing that will blow your mind but genuinely peaceful. The real appeal is the walk itself. The churchyard's worth exploring, and the surrounding area gives you a proper sense of what Killingworth was before it became the dormitory suburb it is now.

It works best if you're the type who enjoys small parish churches and local history rather than cathedral-chasing. Families with young kids might find ten minutes enough unless they're genuinely keen on graveyards, which some absolutely are. The admission situation is typical for these places - likely free, though calling ahead from your caravan won't hurt.

Closeness to Whitley Bay makes it a convenient half-hour slot between beach time and lunch. If you're based at one of the holiday parks nearby, you could combine it with a wander through the village itself and still be back in time for a proper afternoon activity. Don't make a special trip from Newcastle just for this one, but if you're in the area and the weather's decent, go on.
