St John the Baptist, Westbourne

St John the Baptist is a proper medieval building, flint-walled and low-slung, the sort of place where you'll find actual medieval masonry if you bother to look close. Inside, the timber roof catches the light in ways that feel accidental, unhurried. There's no gift shop, no interpretive signage, no sense that anyone's particularly keen to make a fuss about the place.

It's brilliant if you're the type who walks old churches for the architecture rather than the story - medieval fabric matters here, and the chancel has that satisfying sense of age. Families won't linger long unless the kids are genuinely interested in spotting blocked-up medieval doorways and picking out original stonework. Give it twenty minutes, maybe thirty if you're thorough.

Stay at The Old Dairy Farm Glamping just down the road and you've got a proper rural base for exploring this corner of Hampshire. Emsworth itself is a working harbour town, all mudflats and working boats - nothing twee about it. The church visit pairs well with a walk along the water's edge and a pint at one of the local pubs. The real appeal here isn't sightseeing theatre; it's standing in a medieval space that hasn't been gentrified into visitor-friendliness. Some will find that deeply satisfying. Others will wonder why they didn't head to Chichester instead.
