St John the Baptist Church, Barnack, Stamford

The golden stone of St John the Baptist rises above Barnack village like something from a medieval postcard. Built largely in the 12th century, this church is a proper masterclass in Romanesque architecture - if you're into that sort of thing. The exterior alone warrants the walk around the churchyard: buttresses, ornate windows, and that honey-coloured stone that Stamford's so famous for. Inside, the nave opens up with real presence. There's a sense of weight to it all, centuries of worship sunk into the flagstones.

Walkers and architecture enthusiasts will get the most from Barnack. It's not a tourist trap - you'll likely have the place largely to yourself, which makes the experience more contemplative than rushed. The churchyard itself is worth dawdling through, and the village beyond it has genuine quietness to it. Allow an hour if you're thorough, half that if you're just popping in.

Geographically, Barnack sits about four miles south of Stamford, so it slots easily into a broader exploration of the area. If you're staying at Stamford Meadows Glamping just down the road, this is an excellent leg-stretch that doesn't demand much planning. Rockingham Forest Park is also close by, so you could pair it with woodland walking. The church isn't staffed constantly, so check locally in Stamford first - but the building itself is generally accessible during daylight hours. Well worth the detour if medieval stone and quiet villages appeal to you.
