Sutton Heath

Sutton Heath is one of those archaeological sites that rewards the curious but won't hand you much on a plate. It's an Iron Age settlement in Northamptonshire, near Stamford, and what you're looking at are earthworks - basically ditches and banks that once marked out ancient boundaries and structures. Nothing dramatic, nothing reconstructed. Just the landscape telling its story if you know how to read it.

You'll need to do some legwork here, literally. This isn't a visitor centre with laminated boards and a gift shop. It's a walk across open ground where you can pick out the archaeology yourself, which some will find brilliant and others will find a bit underwhelming. Historians and Iron Age enthusiasts will get proper value from it. Families with young kids might struggle unless they're already into that sort of thing - there's not much immediate visual impact.

The main draw is combining it with a broader exploration of the area. Stamford itself is worth a day, and you've got Rockingham Forest Park just three miles away if you're camping at Landal, plus Ferry Meadows Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and The Nest Glamping nearby for your base. In winter, the site's probably easier to navigate when vegetation's down. Summer crowds won't be a problem here - that's not the issue.

Go if you're genuinely interested in Iron Age settlement patterns and landscape archaeology. Skip it if you're after dramatic ruins or something to fill a morning.
