St John the Baptist, Acklam

The church sits quietly on the edge of Acklam village, a solid medieval structure that's easy to drive past without noticing. St John the Baptist dates back centuries, with the kind of weathered stonework and simple interior you'd expect from a working parish church in rural Yorkshire. The chancel's the real draw - there's decent medieval glass in places, and the overall atmosphere is genuinely peaceful in a way that frankly beats some of the more famous cathedral visits.

It's the sort of place history buffs appreciate more than casual visitors. You won't spend hours here, but if you're walking the York area or doing a broader church crawl through East Yorkshire, it's worth the diversion. The village itself is proper quiet - no crowds, no gift shop, just a church that's been ticking along for half a millennium.

York's only six or seven miles south, which makes this a sensible stop if you're basing yourself at Seaways Glamping and Camping nearby. Allow twenty minutes to half an hour, maybe longer if you're into tracing medieval tiles or reading the gravestones. Visiting during daylight hours obviously helps, and if the door's locked (which it sometimes is in smaller churches), there's usually a number posted for the keyholder. Best approached as a quiet pause rather than a destination in itself, but solid value if you're already in the region.
