Garrowby Hill

The view from Garrowby Hill will stop you mid-stride. You're looking down the spine of the Yorkshire Wolds, mile after mile of rolling chalk country that feels properly remote despite being just half an hour from York. It's not a mountain - barely 800 feet - but the slope down to Cawood and beyond catches the light in a way that makes you understand why this spot matters.

Walkers get the most from Garrowby. The hill sits on the Wolds Way, so you can make it part of a proper route rather than just a quick photo stop. The walk up from the car park is straightforward, twenty minutes or so depending on fitness, and the summit gives you 360-degree reward - south towards Market Weighton, north towards Helmsley, and west all the way to the industrial haze above Leeds on a clear day.

There's nothing constructed here, no tea room or interpretation boards. That's the point. You're paying with leg effort, not entry fees. Best visited on a breezy afternoon when the grass is moving and you can actually feel the exposure. Winter light is incredible too, though it gets wet and slippery.

If you're based at one of the glamping spots nearby - Wolds Glamping Pods is closest at six miles - this becomes your morning or evening circuit. Combine it with Dalby Forest to the east, or drift south towards Pocklington to piece together a proper Wolds weekend. An hour here, including the walk, then onwards.
