The church stands solid and grey on the edge of Consett, the sort of place that catches your eye precisely because it doesn't try to. St John is a proper working parish church, not a museum piece, and that's rather the point. The interior has that particular smell - old stone, candle wax, hymn books aging gracefully - that you either find deeply moving or slightly oppressive depending on your frame of mind.

This is mainly for people who actually care about ecclesiastical architecture or local history. If you're a serious church crawler, the stonework and fixtures will reward close inspection. Everyone else might spend twenty minutes looking around, maybe less, before heading back to the car. It's free to visit, which is generous, though opening times aren't always predictable - best to catch it during advertised service hours or ring ahead.

Fits nicely into a broader walk around Consett itself rather than a destination in its own right. From here, you're positioned between Springhouse Boutique Holiday Park, three-and-a-half miles south, and Village Green Holiday Park another mile further on. If you're based at either of those, St John makes a decent morning stroll before moving on to bigger attractions in the area. Hidden Retreat Glamping, six miles west, is close enough for a casual detour, though honestly, unless you're specifically interested in local heritage, you'd be better spending your time at some of the meatier attractions County Durham has to offer.
