Hisehope Reservoir

Walkers will find this the real draw - the reservoir forms part of several decent hiking routes across the moors, with paths that can link up to longer circuits if you're after a proper day out. The water itself is nothing spectacular, more functional than beautiful, but it sits in lovely countryside that opens up views across to the Pennines on clear days.

Families with energetic kids might enjoy the walk, though there's not much here beyond the scenery and fresh air. No facilities to speak of, so bring your own refreshments and waterproofs - this is County Durham moorland, after all.

From holiday parks like Village Green or Allensford near Consett, it makes a decent half-day excursion if you're after some proper countryside walking. Allow two to three hours if you're planning to explore the surrounding paths rather than just reaching the water's edge. The approach roads can be a bit rough, but nothing a normal car can't handle in decent weather.
