St Jerome's Church, Llangwm, Pembrokeshire

The walk down to St Jerome's Church from Llangwm village is half the point. You'll drop through farmland and woodland until suddenly the small stone church appears beside the Cleddau River - it's properly tucked away, the sort of place that rewards the detour.

Inside, it's medieval and modest. The church dates back centuries but doesn't announce itself loudly - no grand nave, no soaring arches. What you get instead is the genuine article: low ceilings, whitewashed walls, worn stone. The river location is the real draw. There's something about standing in a 14th-century building with water flowing past outside that most tourist attractions simply can't manufacture.

Walkers will love this one, particularly those based at Holly Tree Glamping or Oaklea just down the road. It's an easy enough stroll from Llangwm itself - maybe twenty minutes on foot - and pairs well with a riverside wander. Haverfordwest, the nearest proper town, is about four miles away, so this isn't somewhere you'd drive to for an hour. You'd combine it with other riverside walks or use it as a quiet stop if you're exploring the Pembrokeshire countryside.

Bring a torch if you visit in winter - the interior is dim. Allow thirty minutes to actually sit and absorb the place rather than just peek in. Free to visit, naturally. It's the kind of spot that makes you understand why people camp in Pembrokeshire rather than just holiday in it - there's proper history woven into the landscape.
