St James's Church

The parish church stands on Ilfracombe's high street, a solid Victorian rebuild of what was once a medieval place of worship. Inside, there's genuine character - proper stained glass, a decent organ, and the kind of hushed atmosphere that actually feels peaceful rather than stuffy. The real draw is the setting: you're bang in the middle of a working seaside town, so popping in takes five minutes between the harbour and the shops.

It's worth a quick visit if you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Longlands Luxury Glamping is barely three miles away, and Watermouth Valley Camping Park not much further. You won't spend hours here, but the church gives you that sense of Ilfracombe as a proper place with roots, not just a tourist resort. Families with children who can sit still for ten minutes will manage fine; anyone interested in Victorian church architecture will find it solid if unspectacular.

Admission is almost certainly free, as with most parish churches open to visitors. The best time to visit is mid-morning on a weekday when it's quiet and you can actually hear yourself think. Summer Sundays will have services on, so check locally if that matters to you. It's the kind of place that takes fifteen minutes but settles your head before you head back out into the seaside chaos.
