Knapp Down Standing Stone

Standing alone on windswept moorland above Ilfracombe, this solitary megalith has watched over north Devon for around 4,000 years. The stone itself isn't particularly impressive - roughly eight feet tall and weathered by centuries of Atlantic storms - but the setting is properly dramatic. You'll find it perched on Knapp Down, with sweeping views across the Bristol Channel on clear days.

Archaeology enthusiasts will appreciate this Bronze Age survivor, though don't expect detailed interpretation boards or manicured paths. It's a raw encounter with prehistoric Devon, accessed by a fairly straightforward walk across open moorland from the nearest road. The stone stands in isolation, making it feel genuinely ancient and untouched.

Families with young children might find the walk a bit much, and there's honestly not a huge amount to hold attention for more than twenty minutes. But if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Sandaway Beach or Hele Valley, it makes for a decent morning's expedition for anyone interested in early history. The views alone justify the effort on a good day.

Best visited in decent weather when you can properly appreciate the coastal panorama. Allow an hour for the round trip including time to soak up the atmosphere. It's free to visit, naturally, being an open moorland site with no formal facilities.
