Voley Castle (Settlement)

There's not much left of Voley Castle - which is precisely why it's interesting. Near Ilfracombe in Devon, this Iron Age settlement sits quietly on the landscape, largely overlooked by the coach trips heading to more famous coastal spots. What remains are earthwork remains and traces of ancient occupation, enough to get your head around how people lived here two thousand years ago, but not so obvious that you'll spend three hours wandering about.

You'll need to do a bit of detective work to find it, and frankly, that's part of the appeal. This is archaeology for people who like thinking rather than being spoon-fed information boards. History types will get more from it than families with younger kids - there's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no "interactive experience". Just the site itself and your own imagination.

The closest accommodation is Longlands Devon and its luxury glamping sister site, both barely three miles away, making Voley a useful addition to a longer coastal exploration of North Devon. Pair it with a walk around Ilfracombe itself or push up to the Heritage Coast nearby. If you're already camping or glamping in the area - and there are plenty of parks dotted between here and Watermouth Valley - it's worth a detour on a morning when the light is decent.

Go if you're genuinely interested in Iron Age settlement patterns. Skip it if you're after something more obviously visitor-friendly.
