St James' Church, Egerton

The churchyard at St James' sits quietly on the edge of Egerton, a village that time has largely forgotten - which is precisely why it's worth the short drive from Ashford. The church itself is a proper medieval structure, all flint walls and weathered stonework, the sort of place where you can actually feel the centuries pressing down without any twee interpretation panels getting in the way.

Inside, there's genuine substance: original features survive, and the space has that particular hush that only old churches manage. You'll spend twenty minutes here, maybe thirty if you're the type to read every memorial stone. It's the kind of stop that makes sense if you're already in the village, rather than a destination you'd deliberately hunt out from afar.

For families with young children, this works best as a quick cultural breather between activities elsewhere - the churchyard is pleasant for a wander, though there's not enough here to occupy kids for long. History enthusiasts will find the medieval architecture more rewarding, though Egerton itself is fairly low-key.

The real charm emerges when you treat it as part of a broader village ramble. You're only twenty minutes from Go Glamp and Wood View Farm Glamping, both excellent bases for a Kent escape. Either makes a sensible launchpad for exploring this corner of the county - church visit one afternoon, then back to more substantial attractions nearby. It's unhurried, authentic, and refreshingly free of the tourist machinery. Worth the detour if you're already in the area, but not worth routing a holiday around.
