St Idloes Church

The church sits at the heart of Llanidloes, a town that feels properly Welsh - narrow streets, slate roofs, the sort of place where you can wander around for twenty minutes and see everyone twice. St Idloes itself is medieval, though which bits are original and which are later rebuilds is one of those questions the locals probably argue about down the pub. The timber roof is the real draw here - carved and intricate enough to make you crane your neck for a good ten minutes. Inside, it's quiet in that particular way old churches are quiet, where you can hear your own breathing and the occasional tourist's camera shutter.

This works well as a quick stop rather than a destination in itself - thirty minutes maximum, unless you're genuinely into ecclesiastical architecture. History enthusiasts will spend longer than families with young children, who'll get restless once they've looked up at the roof. It's free to get in, which helps.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - Clywedog Riverside or Red Kite Touring are practically on the doorstep - this is a ten-minute stroll into town. Dol-Llys Farm and Ty Llewelyn Glamping are similarly close. The real appeal is combining it with Llanidloes itself: the market square, the half-timbered buildings, maybe a coffee. The church anchors a pleasant ramble rather than commanding the whole afternoon. Worth seeing if you're passing through, not worth driving hours for on its own.
