Bryn-Llys

The walk up Bryn-Llys rewards you with proper views across the Clywedog Valley - nothing dramatic, but the kind of panorama that makes you understand why people settle in Mid Wales. It's a straightforward hill walk from Llanidloes, manageable for most fitness levels and well worth an afternoon if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Clywedog Riverside or Red Kite Touring Park, both just down the road.

You're looking at a rural peak rather than a scenic showstopper. The summit itself is quiet and windswept, with sheep and moorland stretching out below. On a clear day you'll pick out the surrounding hills and the valley floor. In drizzle - which is fairly common up here - it feels moody and atmospheric. Allow a couple of hours there and back, depending on pace.

This works best for walkers after a proper leg-stretch rather than casual strollers. Families with young kids might find the exposed moorland a bit bleak, and there's nothing at the top itself - no cafe, no facilities. The drive from Llanidloes is brief, which makes it a solid option if the weather's decent and you want to get out of the caravan without travelling far.

Free to visit, naturally. Combine it with a meander around Llanidloes town itself or pair it with walks in the broader Clywedog area. The parks sprinkled nearby - Dol-Llys Farm and Ty Llewelyn both within a couple of miles - make this a handy basecamp for exploring the quieter end of Powys.
