St Helen's, Biscathorpe

You'll find St Helen's tucked away in the village of Biscathorpe, a few miles south of Louth in the Lincolnshire Wolds. It's a proper medieval church - the sort that rewards a quiet wander if you're passing through the area. The building itself is 13th-century, with that solid, no-nonsense feel you get from churches built when people actually needed them to last.

What strikes you first is how peaceful it is. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no crowds. Just the church sitting there doing what it's done for seven hundred years. The interior has decent windows and the usual medieval bones - arches, a decent chancel, the sort of details that will keep history buffs occupied for a good half hour if they're into that sort of thing. Kids will probably get restless after ten minutes unless they're genuinely interested in old buildings.

It's free to have a look round, and there's no set visiting hours as far as I can tell - you'll find it open most daylight hours, though always worth checking the door. Give yourself 20 minutes if you're just passing, longer if you like reading inscriptions and poking about.

It's not a destination in itself, but it's exactly the kind of quiet village church that breaks up a day of walking or touring the wider area nicely.
