Colley Hill

The walk up Colley Hill takes about twenty minutes from Louth, and it's steeper than you'd expect for Lincolnshire. What makes it worth the effort is the view across the Wolds - on a clear day you can see for miles, which is genuinely rare in this part of England. The summit itself is modest, no dramatic rock formations or ancient monuments, just open grassland and the sense of having climbed something proper.

It works best for walkers after a few hours exploring Louth itself. The town's got some decent independent shops and a market square worth an hour, then you can make for the hill as an afternoon activity. Families with kids aged eight and up will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the final push tedious. The ground can be boggy after rain, so waterproof boots are genuinely necessary rather than optional.

There's no facilities on the hill itself - bring water and snacks from town. It's free to access, and there's no set opening hours because you're just walking uphill across fields. Early mornings feel proper peaceful; weekends get busier with local joggers.

If you're staying at Three Horseshoes Campsite, which is under a mile away, this is an obvious choice for a morning walk before breakfast. Oxcombe Campsite is further out but still within reasonable driving distance if you're basing yourself elsewhere in the Wolds. Worth doing once, though it's more about the walk than the destination itself.
