Imber Hill

The highest point in Lincolnshire sounds grander than it actually delivers. At 168 metres, Imber Hill is less a dramatic peak and more a modest rise on the Wolds, but that's rather the point - this isn't about conquering mountains. It's about the walk itself and the views across rolling farmland that stretch for miles when the weather plays ball.

The approach from Louth takes you through proper countryside, chalk grassland and ancient woodland that feels genuinely remote despite being close to a reasonable-sized town. The summit offers decent vistas across the East Midlands plateau, and on a clear day you can appreciate why people bothered to mark it as significant. The climb itself is gentle enough for families, though young children might find the final stretch tedious rather than thrilling.

If you're staying at Three Horseshoes Campsite just down the road - it's barely more than half a mile away - this makes an excellent morning stroll before breakfast. Oxcombe Campsite, four miles off, also has you well-positioned for exploring the wider Lincolnshire Wolds. The whole area rewards slow travelling: there's nothing rushing you on, nothing demanding your attention but the landscape itself.

Really, though? Come for the Wolds walking rather than expecting a destination. Imber Hill is part of something bigger, not a destination in itself. Allow 90 minutes return if you're leisurely about it. Free, naturally - it's just a hill. Go when the ground isn't waterlogged, which in Lincolnshire means planning ahead.
