St Helen

The church sits quietly in the village of Stillingfleet, just south of York - easy enough to find if you're staying at one of the local glamping spots. St Helen is a proper medieval church, the sort that stops you mid-walk because suddenly there it is, all stone and history against the flat Yorkshire landscape.

Inside, there's a lot to unpack if you care about old churches. The chancel is 12th century, which means it's older than most things you'll see in a day trip round here. There are bits of decorated stonework, decent Victorian restoration work that doesn't feel too heavy-handed, and the kind of quiet that makes you actually want to sit down for five minutes.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're combining it with a walk - the village is small enough that you can stretch your legs properly without ending up in the middle of nowhere. Families with church-keen kids will find it interesting; everyone else might spend twenty minutes here maximum, then head off toward York itself.

Free to visit, as far as I can tell, and there's no faffing about with opening times - it's just there. Worth the diversion if you're based at Wolds Glamping or Yapham Holds and fancy a gentle explore on foot. Don't make it your main event, but as part of a morning's potter round the Wolds it works well.
