The church stands on a gentle rise in Sheerness, its tower visible from several streets away. St Giles is a proper medieval affair, with enough history embedded in its walls to keep anyone interested for a good hour. The interior has that particular smell of old wood and stone that never gets old - genuinely calming. You'll find decent stained glass work and some neat architectural details if you're into that sort of thing, though it's not going to blow your mind if medieval churches aren't your bag.

It works best for walkers and history types rather than families with restless kids, unless yours are the quiet, observant sort. The churchyard itself is pleasant for a wander, with plenty of gravestone hunting if that appeals. Allow maybe 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how much you read. It's free to pop in, which is always a bonus.

If you're staying at Gatehouse Wood Country Park or Shurland Dale Holiday Park nearby, it's absolutely worth the short drive into Sheerness to have a look. The town's not exactly a knockout, but St Giles is a solid cultural break from holiday park life - the sort of thing that stops a week feeling like you've just done activities and rides. Go on a clear day if you can; the light through those windows actually matters.
