St Gerrans

The churchyard at St Gerrans sits right on the edge of Gerrans Bay, which is frankly the best spot any Cornish church could ask for. It's a modest medieval affair - nothing flashy - but the setting makes it worth seeking out if you're exploring this corner of the Roseland Peninsula, south of Truro.

You get a proper walk to reach it, which filters out the coach-trip crowds. The church itself dates back centuries and has that authentic, well-loved feel you find in working parish churches rather than heritage attractions. The real draw is standing in the churchyard on a clear day with the bay spreading out below - it's the kind of place where you actually understand why someone decided to build something permanent here.

It won't eat up hours of your time. Twenty minutes to nose around, another twenty if you're the type to sit on a bench and watch the light change on the water. History buffs will appreciate the medieval fabric, but this isn't a destination in itself - it's a cracking spot to add to a coastal walk or a meander through the villages around Veryan. The graveyard itself has good bones, and locals take obvious care of it.

If you're camped at Veryan Camping and Caravanning Club Site just up the road, it's an easy addition to your day. Free to visit, naturally. Go early morning or late afternoon when the light's best and you'll have the place largely to yourself.
