St. Garmon's Church

This 12th-century church sits quietly on the outskirts of Caernarfon, and it's the sort of place that rewards wandering off the main tourist trail. St. Garmon's is genuinely old - the kind of building where you can feel the centuries in the stonework - though it's been restored enough times that it doesn't feel like you're exploring a ruin.

The interior is fairly modest, with the usual medieval bones: stone arches, a simple altar, monuments to local gentry gathering dust in corners. It's not going to blow your mind architecturally, but there's something grounding about sitting in a church that's been in continuous use for 900 years. The churchyard is peaceful, if a bit overgrown in places.

This works best for walkers and history types rather than families looking for a day's entertainment - kids will get restless in about twenty minutes. Allow half an hour if you're genuinely interested, less if you're just passing through.

The real appeal is context. Caernarfon itself is dominated by its castle, so St. Garmon's offers a quieter counterpoint to all that medieval military architecture. If you're based at Talymignedd Campsite or Beddgelert Campsite nearby, it's an easy detour on a morning walk before heading to the bigger attractions. Worth a look if you're already in the area, but not worth a special trip from further afield.
