St Francis de Sales is the real deal if you're interested in 19th-century religious architecture - red brick, proper Gothic Revival lines, and genuinely moving interior decoration. You'll find it's less showy than some grander cathedrals, which is rather the point.

The church itself tells you something about Victorian Britain's complicated relationship with Catholicism. Built when there was still a fair bit of suspicion around the faith, it sits modestly in town but reveals its ambitions once you step inside. The stained glass alone rewards a proper look, and the altar work is detailed without being overwrought.

Come early on a weekday if you can - you'll likely have the place to yourself, which means you can actually hear what the space is trying to say rather than competing with other visitors. Most people spend 20 to 30 minutes here, longer if you're genuinely interested in the period's ecclesiastical design. Families with older kids will get more from it than young ones, to be honest.

It sits well within a wider Kent exploration - Thriftwood Country Park is only 4.3 miles away, and if you're after something more hands-on, Badgells Wood Camping (5 miles out) offers proper woodland pitches. Either makes a solid base for combining church visits with actual walking and fresh air, rather than just bumbling around Sevenoaks town centre.
