St Eilian

Getting to St Eilian means leaving your car near Amlwch and walking out across farmland to a peninsula on Anglesey's north coast. It's worth the leg-work. This medieval church sits in one of those genuinely remote spots that makes you feel properly away from it all - just fields, sky, and the Irish Sea beyond.

The church itself is small and ancient, with that intimate atmosphere you only get in places that have been quietly standing for centuries. There's a holy well nearby too, which adds to the sense that this was somewhere people came specifically for spiritual reasons, not just because a village happened to grow up around it. The walk takes about thirty minutes depending on where you park and how often you stop to take photographs.

It's not a destination for children chasing excitement round every corner - if your kids have the patience for countryside walks and can appreciate something understated, they'll find it interesting. History buffs will appreciate the age and isolation. Walkers get a decent stretch of coast and decent views across the water.

The beauty here is its lack of fuss. No café, no visitor centre, no interpretation boards. Just a church doing what it's been doing for about seven hundred years. Mount View Caravan and Camping sits just under a mile away, making this an easy morning or afternoon excursion if you're based there. Allow a couple of hours if you want to take your time and actually look at the place rather than just tick it off.
