St Edward’s Church

St Edward's is a proper Grade II listed building, all red sandstone and Gothic Revival detail, built in the 1880s when the resort was still finding its feet as a destination. Inside, there's proper stained glass and the kind of calm that seaside towns rarely manage to hold onto these days.

You're looking at maybe twenty minutes here if you just want a quick look around - it's not a sprawling cathedral, but it's worth the detour if you're walking the coast or staying at one of the nearby holiday parks. Families won't find it thrilling, to be honest. Kids get restless in empty churches. But if you're into Victorian ecclesiastical architecture or just after somewhere quiet to sit down while your partner drags you around Whitley Bay's amusement arcades, this does the job.

It's genuinely free to visit and opens during daylight hours - though best to check ahead if you're making a special trip. The location alone makes it worth knowing about: you can walk straight from the seafront, visit the church, then carry on to White Swan Pool or head back towards the Promenade. If you're based at Parkdean Resorts or Old Hartley Campsite, it's an easy pop-out rather than a serious expedition. Not life-changing, but a useful bit of character that stops Whitley Bay feeling entirely one-note.
