St Ebba's Chapel

Crumbling stone walls perch dramatically on a rocky outcrop overlooking the North Sea, marking what remains of this 7th-century chapel dedicated to St Ebba. The ruins sit on Ebba's Nook, a windswept headland between Beadnell and the fishing village of Craster, offering one of Northumberland's most atmospheric archaeological sites.

History buffs will find plenty to ponder among these weathered foundations. St Ebba was an Anglo-Saxon princess who founded a monastery here, though Viking raids eventually destroyed the original settlement. What you see today are the skeletal remains of a later medieval chapel built on the same sacred ground.

Getting there requires a proper coastal walk from either direction - there's no road access, which keeps the crowds away. The path from Beadnell is particularly scenic, winding along clifftops with views across to the Farne Islands. Allow at least two hours for the round trip from Beadnell, longer if you fancy exploring the rock pools below.

Families with older children who don't mind a decent hike will love this spot, especially when combined with a visit to nearby Dunstanburgh Castle. The exposed location means it's best avoided in foul weather - those North Sea winds can be brutal.

Staying at Beadnell Bay Camping and Caravanning Club Site puts you perfectly placed for the coastal walk, while Dunstan Hill site offers easy access to both this chapel and Craster's famous kippers.
