St Dunstan's Church, Snargate

The church sits alone in the Kentish marshlands near Tenterden, a proper medieval survivor that feels older than it has any right to. St Dunstan's is one of those places where you half expect the vicar to turn up in a cassock from the 1400s. The interior is genuinely atmospheric - all low timber ceilings, worn flagstones, and the sort of quiet that makes you speak in whispers without meaning to.

It's the setting that gets you, really. Surrounded by open fields and the Romney Marsh landscape, there's something almost haunting about the isolation. You can stand outside and just listen to the wind move through the grass. The church itself is small enough to see properly in twenty minutes, but the walk from the nearest road justifies an hour if you're making a proper excursion of it.

This is one for history types and walkers more than families - there's not much hands-on activity, and young kids might find the quiet a bit dull. But if you're the sort who appreciates real medieval stonework and the romance of a building that's been standing in the same spot for six centuries, you'll find it worthwhile.

If you're based at either Romney Meadows or Marlie Holiday Park, both within easy striking distance, St Dunstan's makes a good morning walk before heading into Tenterden proper for lunch. Free to visit, no fixed hours that I'm aware of - it's the sort of place you approach on faith.
