St Dial's Wood

St Dial's Wood sits just outside Coleford in the heart of the Forest of Dean, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than deliberately seek out. The woodland itself is dense and atmospheric, with proper old-growth trees that make you feel genuinely tucked away from the world. There's a small stone structure on-site - the ruins of St Dial's chapel - which gives the place its name and a bit of historical weight, though honestly you'll spend most of your time just walking among the trees rather than staring at old stones.

For walkers, this is genuinely worthwhile. The paths are well-trodden enough not to be confusing, but quiet enough that you won't be tripping over school groups. Kids will enjoy the woodland exploration aspect for an hour or so, though there's nothing flashy here - no play equipment, no visitor centre. If you're into forest bathing or just want to spend an afternoon away from crowds, you'll appreciate what it offers. The canopy is thick enough that even on grey days it feels rather magical.

Access appears to be free, though facilities are minimal. Allow a couple of hours for a proper wander. If you're camped at any of the nearby spots - Bracelands, Greenacres, or Doward Park are all within easy striking distance - St Dial's makes a decent half-day addition to your Forest of Dean itinerary. It won't replace visits to more popular attractions, but as a genuine forest experience without the tourist infrastructure, it's worth the drive from Coleford.
