St Decuman's Church

The church sits on the cliffs above Watchet, a small Somerset coastal town, and on a clear day the views across the Bristol Channel are genuinely worth the drive alone. St Decuman's is a proper medieval building - late 15th century mostly - with the kind of solid, no-nonsense architecture that tells you this place has weathered centuries of Atlantic wind without flinching.

Inside, it's surprisingly light and spacious for a country church. The nave opens up nicely, and there's enough detail to keep history buffs occupied for twenty minutes or so - medieval stonework, some decent memorials, the usual accumulated clutter of parish life. Nothing flashy, but that's rather the point. This is a working church, not a museum.

The real draw is combining it with a cliff walk. You can park near Watchet and wander up to St Decuman's, then continue along the coastal path towards Cleeve Abbey inland - perfect if you're staying at Butlins Minehead or the Caravan Club site nearby. Allow an hour for the church and walk, maybe longer if you linger over the views.

Admission is free, which is standard for country parishes, though a small donation box is usually tucked somewhere. Visiting outside service times is generally fine, but it's worth checking locally in Watchet first if you're uncertain. The walk up from the car park is fairly gentle - nothing too steep - making it manageable for families with younger kids or less mobile visitors. Taunton is about twenty minutes south if you need proper amenities.
