Watchet Memorial Ground

The Memorial Ground at Watchet is a proper local nature reserve that punches above its weight. It's a modest patch of wetland and grassland on the edge of this quiet Somerset coastal town, just a short walk from the seafront - the sort of place locals know well but visitors often miss entirely.

What you get here is genuine habitat rather than manicured parkland. Reedbeds, wet meadows, and open water attract a decent variety of birds depending on season. Spring and autumn migrations are when it's worth planning around; winter brings overwintering species. Bring binoculars and a bird guide - this is proper birdwatching territory, not a stroll-and-gawk affair.

Walkers will find it works as a circular route, easily done in an hour if you're not stopping to scrutinise every reedbed. It's flat, which means families with younger legs won't complain, though there's not much here to hold children's attention beyond 45 minutes unless they're genuinely into wildlife. The paths can get boggy after rain - nothing dramatic, just worth knowing.

Stay at Warren Bay or Doniford Bay, both within spitting distance, and you could slot this in as a morning outing before hitting the beaches or heading inland toward Taunton. It's free to access, which is exactly as it should be. Not a destination on its own, but if you're staying in the area and like birds and open space, it's well worth the detour. Watchet itself has enough charm - the harbour, a decent chippy, a working port - to make a proper afternoon of it.
