St. Davids Cathedral

The cathedral sits in a hollow just outside St Davids town centre, which means you don't really see it coming until you're practically on top of it. That's by design - medieval builders tucked it away deliberately, making pilgrims work for their spiritual reward. The building itself is a proper medieval masterpiece, all purple sandstone and soaring arches, with a particularly fine roof that dates back centuries.

Inside, there's genuine atmosphere. The choir stalls are intricate, the stonework speaks for itself, and if you time it right you might catch evensong - worth staying for if you're not rushed. It's free to wander round, though donations are expected and honestly, after you've spent time in there, you'll want to contribute.

History types will spend a good hour minimum picking over the details. Families with younger kids might manage twenty minutes before legs get restless - the space is large but there's not much to actively do, just look at. Walkers should absolutely include it in a St Davids loop; it's central and connects easily to coastal paths.

If you're camping at Pembrokeshire Meadows - literally a ten-minute walk away - you can slip down first thing when it's quiet, before day-trippers arrive. That's when the cathedral feels most like what it was built for. Worth an afternoon rather than a rushed half-hour.
