St Cwrdaf's Church

The little stone church sits quietly above Llangadog, unremarkable at first glance but absolutely worth the short walk from the town. St Cwrdaf's is properly old - we're talking medieval foundations here - and the kind of place where you can actually feel the weight of centuries rather than just read about it on a plaque.

Inside, the whitewashed walls are simple and austere, which rather suits the whole thing. There's genuine medieval stonework if you look closely, and the church has that particular smell - damp stone, old wood, time itself - that no amount of restoration can fake. The churchyard is equally rewarding, with some seriously ancient graves weathered to near illegibility.

This isn't a destination that'll occupy you for hours. Budget thirty minutes, maybe forty if you're the type to sit in the pews and contemplate. Historians and anyone with an interest in rural Welsh ecclesiastical architecture will get genuine pleasure from it. Families with young kids might find it a bit quiet and serious, though the walk up is pleasant enough.

You'll need to sort access locally - the church isn't monumentally publicised - but Llangadog is only a stone's throw away, and if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Abermarlais or Barons Court, it's an easy morning excursion. Pair it with a walk along the Towy Valley for a proper half-day out.
