Bryn-têg

The walk up Bryn-têg from Llangadog takes you through proper Welsh hill country, the kind of place where you genuinely feel you've left the tourist trail behind. It's not a massive peak - more of a solid afternoon's outing than an all-day expedition - but the views across the Tywi Valley are worth the effort, especially if you time it for late afternoon when the light gets interesting.

From the summit you can see right across Carmarthenshire's farming land, with the Black Mountains rising up in the distance. The walk itself is straightforward enough for anyone with reasonable fitness, though it does get a bit steep in places and the paths can be muddy after rain. Allow a couple of hours up and down, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.

This works brilliantly if you're based at one of the local caravan parks - Barons Court or Cosmos Camping are both close to Llangadog and give you easy access to the surrounding hills. It's the sort of walk that appeals to proper walkers rather than casual strollers, though families with older kids will manage it fine. Young children might find the ascent a bit of a slog.

The real appeal is the solitude. You won't be dodging crowds or queuing for anything. It's just you, the hills, and a very Welsh landscape that hasn't been prettified for visitors. Go on a clear day - a misty one and you'll see nothing but cloud.
