St Cuthbert's Church, Donington

The churchyard at Donington sits quietly off the main drag between Shifnal and nowhere in particular - easy to miss if you're not looking for it. St Cuthbert's is a proper medieval affair, all solid stone and the kind of roof repairs that have been patched up over centuries. The interior's worth a look if you can get in: there's decent woodwork, some old monuments, and that particular smell of old English churches that either moves you or doesn't.

It's the sort of place history enthusiasts will linger over - registers, burial stones, the accumulated layers of who mattered in this corner of Staffordshire. Families with kids? Unless they're already keen on churches, they'll give it ten minutes and want the car park back.

The real point is context. You won't trek here solo. But if you're staying at Oakland Holiday Park nearby - which is excellent, mind - and you're exploring the area between Shifnal and Albrighton, St Cuthbert's makes sense as a twenty-minute stop. There's something good about visiting a working parish church that nobody's rammed with tourist signage. It's local, it's free (presumably), and it tells you more about the region than a dozen interpretation boards would.

Check opening hours locally before you go. Don't expect car facilities or anything fancy. Just a church doing what churches do: standing there.
