St Cross Church

The water meadows around Winchester open up suddenly, and there's St Cross Church sitting quietly by the River Itchen like it's been waiting centuries for you to notice it. Which it has - this is proper medieval England, a 12th-century foundation that somehow escaped the worst of Cromwell's lot and most of the Victorians' heavy-handed restoration work.

Walking inside feels like stepping into a building that's actually lived in its faith rather than performed it. The chancel arch is a brute of a thing, the windows tell their stories in fragments of original glass, and the whole space has that specific cold-air-and-stone smell that genuinely old churches own. There's a brass to William de Stonor from 1419 - the kind of detail that pins a real person to a real moment in time.

It's free to visit, though the church can be shut outside service times (worth ringing ahead if you're making a special trip). Budget an hour if you're genuinely interested in medieval architecture; twenty minutes if you're just passing through from Winchester town centre, which is only a short walk away through the meadows.

For a caravan holiday in the area, this works perfectly alongside the main attractions. Hookpit Farm and Holden Farm are both solid bases with proper facilities, and you're close enough to Winchester's cathedral and high street for the non-church members of your group. St Cross won't detain you long, but it's the kind of place that stays with you - quiet, unshowy, exactly what it's meant to be.
