St Columb Church

The church sits right in the heart of St Columb Major, a proper Cornish village that hasn't tried too hard to become anything it isn't. St Columb Church is the sort of place where you wander in mid-afternoon and have the whole space to yourself, which is exactly when medieval churches show their best hand.

It's a 15th-century building with the kind of sturdy granite walls you'd expect in Cornwall, and inside there's some decent Victorian restoration work that doesn't feel jarring. The real draw for most visitors is the sense of stepping back into village life as it's been lived here for centuries. Not dramatic or showy, just solid and functional.

Historically minded types will get more out of it than families with young kids, to be honest. There's no interactive anything, no café, no gift shop. You're looking at a quiet space to sit and think, or to appreciate the craftsmanship of the stonework. Allow 30 minutes, longer if you're the type to read every inscription.

If you're staying at Trewan Hall just down the road, or any of the bigger parks near Newquay - White Acres, Sun Haven, Hendra - this works as a morning detour before heading to the coast. St Columb Major itself has a village shop and a couple of pubs if you need to stretch your legs properly. Free admission, obviously. Go when you're passing through rather than making a special trip.
