St. Chad's Church

The church sits on a slight rise overlooking the River Tees, and if you're staying at Donnewell Farm just down the road, it's worth the short drive to have a proper look. St. Chad's has that solid, no-nonsense feel of Anglo-Saxon churches - whitewashed walls, a stubby tower, and the kind of interior that feels genuinely old rather than restored to within an inch of its life.

What strikes you most is the simplicity. There's a Saxon doorway that's survived since around the 7th century, worn smooth by centuries of worshippers. The nave is narrow and low-ceilinged, which means you get a real sense of how different church-going was back then - less about spectacle, more about shelter and reverence. The chancel's been reworked over the centuries, naturally, but the bones of the place tell an honest story.

It's the sort of stop that works best for history-minded visitors rather than kids after a full day out. You'll spend 20 minutes here, perhaps 30 if you're the type to sit quietly and read the board about the church's centuries. Stockton-on-Tees is close by if you need town facilities, but really this is a contemplative pause between park activities.

Admission appears to be free, and the churchyard itself is pleasant for a wander. Not a destination in itself, but absolutely the kind of thing that justifies a caravan holiday base - accessible, genuine, and genuinely worth seeing.
