St Catherine's Ludham

St Catherine's sits in the quiet Norfolk village of Ludham, roughly ten miles west of Great Yarmouth, and it's one of those medieval churches that rewards a proper look. The building itself dates back centuries - all flint and stone with a decent tower that gives it real presence against the flat Broadland landscape. Inside, you'll find the sort of things that make church-spotters genuinely excited: original medieval roof timbers, various bits of carved wood, and if you're lucky, someone who knows the place well enough to point out the interesting details most visitors miss.

This isn't a showstopper like Norwich Cathedral, but that's rather the point. You get the atmosphere without the crowds, and there's something quite lovely about wandering round at your own pace. The village itself is proper quiet - the kind of place where you hear the birds properly. It works brilliantly as a stop if you're exploring the Broads on foot or by car. The Norfolk Broads Country Park sits just across the way, and Norfolk Broads Haven is only a few miles off if you're based at one of the caravan parks in the area.

Allow yourself twenty minutes to half an hour, unless you're really into medieval architecture, in which case you'll want longer. There's no charge that I'm aware of, though do check ahead. Families with older kids will get something from it; very young ones might find it dull. Best visited as part of a Broads loop rather than a destination in itself.
