St. Catherine's Hill

The walk up St. Catherine's Hill from Winchester takes about twenty minutes, and the reward is a proper panorama of the city below and the chalk downs beyond. It's not a dramatic scramble - the path is well-trodden and manageable for most fitness levels - but it's steep enough to give you a real sense of achievement once you're at the top.

The hill itself is interesting historically. There's an Iron Age fort up there, though you won't see much beyond the earthworks and some informational boards if you're lucky. What matters more is the view and the space to breathe. On a clear day you can see right across Hampshire's gentle landscape, and Winchester Cathedral's spire sits below like something from a child's diorama.

Walkers will get the most out of this. It's straightforward enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find the incline tedious. Allow an hour if you're pottering about taking photos, less if you're just summit-bagging. There's no café at the top, so bring water.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Holden Farm is genuinely excellent and only 4.8 miles out - this is an easy morning or late-afternoon outing before heading back for dinner. Winchester itself is worth a day, and St. Catherine's Hill serves as a proper punctuation mark to a visit: a short, sharp walk that reminds you why you came to this part of Hampshire in the first place.
